Tanguar Haor

Tanguar Haor is one of the largest river basin wetland ecosystem (approximately 100 kmĀ² in area) having national importance as well as international focus, located at Tahirpur and Dharmapasha Upazilas (sub-district), Sunamgonj district of the north-eastern part of Bangladesh. Forty six villages are scattered throughout the Haor, which provides livelihoods for more than 40,000 of its residents. To address overexploitation of its natural resources, it has been declared as an Ecologically Critical Area in 1990 by Bangladesh Government. It is a rich ecosystem accompanied by a mosaic of habitats for hundred types of migratory birds and indigenous fish species, and other aquatic flora and fauna. This Haor ecosystem has been declared as a Ramsar site in 2000 for being a wetland of international importance.

It is approximately 80 km away from the Sylhet Agricultural University campus and takes roughly 2.0 hours to reach there by bus. The single day excursion includes a pleasant boat trip to enjoy scenic beauty of Haor ecosystem in Bangladesh. This field trip will provide opportunity to visit various areas of reed lands, swamp forests and fish congregation areas, fishing villages, etc
